The problem with standard extinguishers

Conventional ABC and CO₂ extinguishers weren't designed for lithium-ion chemistry. They can knock down visible flames, but they don't address the real danger: thermal runaway.

When a lithium-ion cell fails, it heats its neighbours, which fail in turn — a self-sustaining chain reaction that can push temperatures as high as 1600°C. That heat is why these fires can reignite hours after they appear to be out, and why a quick blast from the wrong extinguisher can give a false sense of safety.

Controlling an EV fire isn't about smothering flames. It's about cooling the battery and interrupting the runaway before it takes hold.

Fire safety equipment supports emergency services — it doesn't replace them. If an EV fire occurs:

1. Call 000 immediately. Always. This equipment is designed to contain and control a fire until firefighters arrive.
2. Only tackle small, early-stage fires, and only if it's safe to do so.
3. If the fire is large, spreading, or you're unsure — evacuate. Your safety comes first, every time.

Keep the unit somewhere accessible — wall-mounted brackets work well. Run a monthly visual check that the pressure gauge sits in the green and the pin and seal are intact, and inspect annually.

Be prepared before you need it

EV fires are statistically rare — but when they happen, they're severe and hard to control. That's the entire case for being ready in advance rather than hoping you never are.
