The good news is that safe charging is simple once you know what to watch for. Here's how to keep your ride — and your home — safe.

Why home charging is the danger point

A large share of lithium-ion battery fires start during or shortly after charging. At home that's especially serious, because e-bikes and e-scooters are usually charged exactly where we don't want a fire: inside hallways, in apartments, in the garage under the house, or near the front door — often overnight while everyone's asleep and no one is watching.

Charging habits that cut your risk

• Use the charger that came with the device, or a genuine replacement. Cheap mismatched chargers are a common cause of overheating.
• Don't charge unattended overnight. Charge while you're awake and around, and unplug once it's full.
• Charge in a clear, ventilated spot — not on carpet, not on the bed, not buried under bags or clothing.
• Keep it away from your exit. If a battery ignites near your only doorway, it can block your escape.
• Watch for warning signs. Swelling, unusual heat, hissing, odd smells or a battery that won't hold charge all mean stop using it.
• Don't charge a damaged battery. If it's been dropped hard or looks deformed, keep it away from anything flammable and replace it.
