E-Bike and E-Scooter Fires: Why a 1L Extinguisher and Containment Blanket Belong in Every Home and Workshop
E-bikes and e-scooters have become one of the fastest-growing ways to get around Australian cities and suburbs. They're cheap to run, easy to park, and genuinely fun to ride. But the lithium-ion batteries that power them carry a risk most owners never think about until it's too late: when one of these batteries fails, it doesn't fail gently.
A lithium-ion battery fire behaves nothing like a fire in paper, timber, or even petrol. It can ignite without warning, often while charging and unattended overnight, and once it starts it is extremely difficult to control with the gear most households already own. That's the gap our EV Fire Safety Bundle – 1L Fire Extinguisher + E Blanket is built to close.
What makes lithium-ion battery fires so different
When a lithium-ion cell is damaged, overcharged, overheated, or simply manufactured with a defect, it can enter a self-sustaining chain reaction known as thermal runaway. In plain terms, the battery starts generating its own heat faster than it can dissipate it, and that heat drives the reaction harder. The result is a fire that:
- Can reach extremely high temperatures, well beyond what a typical household fire produces
- Releases toxic and flammable gases as the cells vent
- Can reignite hours after it appears to be out, because the reaction continues inside the battery pack
- Spreads rapidly to anything nearby — furniture, walls, other vehicles, or stored stock
This is why a standard dry-powder or CO² extinguisher, designed for conventional fires, isn't the right first line of defence. It may knock down visible flames briefly, but it does little to address the heat driving thermal runaway, and it won't stop the battery reigniting.
Importantly, EV and e-mobility fires remain statistically uncommon. The point of preparation isn't fear — it's that when one does happen, the consequences are severe and fast-moving, so having the right equipment within arm's reach genuinely matters.
What's in the bundle
The bundle pairs two products that work together: one to cool and tackle the source, and one to contain and isolate it.
1L EV Fire Suppression Unit
Our 1L extinguisher is formulated specifically for the high-temperature, volatile nature of lithium-ion battery fires rather than general-purpose use. The compact 1L size is matched to smaller vehicles like e-bikes and e-scooters, and to homes or workshops with limited storage space.
There is currently no dedicated Australian Standard for lithium-ion battery fire extinguishers. Our suppression unit complies with the European and International Standards EN-3-7-2004 and A1-2007, which we reference openly so you know exactly what you're buying.
To use it, follow the PASS method: Pull the pin, Aim at the base of the fire or the battery area, Squeeze the handle, and Sweep from side to side. With a lithium-ion fire, the priority is cooling the battery pack area to interrupt the thermal runaway process.
2m × 2m EV Fire Containment Blanket
The blanket is the containment half of the equation. At 2.0m × 2.0m and weighing 2.2kg, it's sized to cover an e-bike or e-scooter and help contain the fire and the heat it throws off, buying time and limiting spread to surrounding property. It's tested to EN 13501 and designed for workshops, garages, and any space where e-mobility devices are charged or stored.
A key point on language: we describe this as a containment blanket, not a magic "extinguish-everything" tool. Its job is to control and contain the fire — smothering oxygen at the surface and reducing radiant heat — while you get clear and emergency services arrive. With practice, deployment takes around 60–90 seconds, and it's safer and faster with two people. We recommend unpacking and practising the deployment when your blanket arrives, well away from any fire, so you're not learning under pressure.
Where this bundle earns its place
This bundle is a sensible baseline for anyone who lives or works around e-mobility devices, including:
- Homeowners and renters charging an e-bike or e-scooter in a garage, shed, hallway, or apartment
- Workshops and repair shops servicing or storing multiple devices
- Strata and body corporate settings where residents charge devices in shared spaces
- Fleet and delivery operators running e-bikes and e-scooters across one or more sites
If you charge overnight, charge indoors, or store several devices in one place, your exposure is higher — and so is the case for having containment and suppression on hand.
Where to store it
Keep the extinguisher in an easily accessible spot near where you charge or store your vehicle — a wall-mounted bracket works well so it's always in the same place. Keep the blanket in its storage bag nearby, either wall-mounted or in a clearly labelled cabinet. Both products are designed to handle normal garage temperature variation; just avoid prolonged moisture or direct chemical contact.
A quick monthly check goes a long way: confirm the extinguisher's pressure gauge sits in the green zone, the pin and seal are intact, and there's no visible damage. Inspect the blanket for any damage and make sure it's still in its bag and ready to go.
The most important step: always call 000
No piece of equipment replaces the fire brigade. If an e-bike or e-scooter battery catches fire, call 000 immediately. This bundle is designed to help you contain and control a fire in its early stages and slow its spread until professionals arrive — not to replace them.
Only ever attempt to tackle a small fire in its earliest stage, and only if it is safe to do so. If the fire is large, spreading, producing heavy smoke, or you're unsure, get everyone out and wait for emergency services. Property can be replaced. You can't.
Be prepared with the right action plan
E-bikes and e-scooters are here to stay, and so is the responsibility that comes with charging lithium-ion batteries at home and at work. A small, deliberate investment in the right gear means that if the worst happens, you have a containment blanket and a purpose-formulated extinguisher within reach instead of scrambling for tools that were never designed for the job.
