Lithium Ion Fire Blankets

Lithium Ion Fire Blankets

Lithium ion fire blankets are specialized fire suppression tools designed to contain and extinguish fires involving lithium-ion batteries. Here's what they do:

Primary Functions:

Contain thermal runaway: When a lithium-ion battery overheats and enters thermal runaway (a chain reaction of overheating), the blanket helps contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby batteries or materials

Suppress flames: The blanket cuts off oxygen supply to smother the fire

Reduce toxic gas release: They help contain dangerous gases like hydrogen fluoride that are released during lithium battery fires

Cool the battery: Some blankets help dissipate heat to prevent re-ignition

How they work:

The blankets are typically made from fire-resistant materials like fiberglass, ceramic fibers, or specialized fabrics that can withstand extremely high temperatures (often 1000°C+). You place them directly over the burning battery or device to create a sealed environment that starves the fire of oxygen.

Common uses:

Electric vehicle fires (cars, e-bikes, scooters)
Consumer electronics (phones, laptops, power tools)
Energy storage systems
Emergency response situations

Important note:
Lithium-ion battery fires can be particularly challenging because they can re-ignite even after appearing extinguished, and they release toxic gases. These specialized blankets are more effective than regular fire blankets or water for this specific type of fire, though professional firefighting response is still recommended for large incidents.
