Fire blankets vs extinguishers: which do you need?

Both have a place in battery fire safety, but they do different jobs. Knowing which tool suits which scenario helps you build the right kit rather than the most expensive one.

Lithium-ion fires resist conventional tactics: the cells self-feed oxygen and the reaction continues inside the pack even when flames are knocked down (International Council on Clean Transportation, 2024). That reality shapes what each tool can realistically achieve.

EV fire blankets — containment first

A high-temperature fire blanket is built to cover or wrap a burning device, isolating it from surroundings and suppressing flames while heat dissipates. Blankets shine where the goal is to contain and protect — stopping a fire spreading to nearby vehicles, furniture or structures. Sizing ranges from compact e-bike and scooter blankets through to full car-sized blankets and heavy-duty high-silica options for industrial heat.

EV fire extinguishers — early suppression

Purpose-built EV extinguishers help cool and suppress a small battery fire in its early stages, which is exactly when intervention is most effective. A 1L extinguisher suits homes and e-mobility devices, while a 4L extinguisher suits larger spaces and workplaces.

The honest answer: for most people, the best setup is both. An extinguisher to act early, and a blanket to contain if the fire takes hold. That's why bundles pair the two.

A quick matching guide

  • Home with an e-bike/scooter: 1L extinguisher + e-bike blanket bundle.
  • EV owner / garage: car fire blanket + 4L extinguisher.
  • Workplace / warehouse: heavy-duty blanket + 4L extinguisher.
