What is this blanket for?
It's a heavy-duty 5m x 5m high-silica containment blanket for lithium-ion battery fires, built for commercial and industrial settings. It suits forklifts, small vehicles and machinery, and facilities where lithium-ion equipment is charged, operated or stored. Deployed over the source, it smothers the flames, cuts off oxygen and limits the spread until Fire and Rescue arrive.
Why do I need a specialised blanket, not an ordinary one?
Lithium-ion battery fires behave very differently to conventional fires. They burn at extreme temperatures, can reignite hours after they appear to be out, and give off toxic gas. A standard fire blanket isn't built for these conditions. This high-silica blanket is rated to a 1600 degrees C working temperature and tested to the European EN 13501 fire safety standard.
What's the difference between the high-silica and the silicon-coated fibreglass blanket?
This is the heavy-duty option. Its high-silica fabric is built to handle sustained exposure to very high heat, rated to a 1600 degrees C working temperature, which suits demanding, repeat-exposure commercial and industrial environments such as forklift charging bays and workshops. Our silicon-coated fibreglass 5m x 5m blanket is a lighter, lower-cost option rated to 1100 degrees C for lighter-duty use. If you're not sure which fits, contact us.
What size and weight is it, and what does it cover?
It's 5m x 5m and weighs about 16.9kg. At that size it covers forklifts, small commercial vehicles and machinery. For a full-size passenger EV, ask us about the larger 6m x 8m car blanket instead.
Does it meet an Australian Standard?
There is currently no specific Australian Standard for lithium-ion battery fires. This blanket is tested to the European EN 13501 fire safety standard, which gives a recognised, rigorous benchmark for performance and durability, and it carries a rated working temperature of 1600 degrees C.
How do I use it in an emergency?
If it is safe to do so, cover the burning equipment with the blanket to smother the flames, cut off oxygen and isolate the source, then get clear. Do not lift the blanket to check, and never put yourself at risk. With practice, deployment takes around 60 to 90 seconds. Given its size and weight (about 16.9kg), two people should deploy it for speed and safety. We recommend running through it once when it arrives, without exposing it to fire.
Will it put the fire out, and should I still call 000?
Always call 000 immediately. This blanket is a containment tool, not a replacement for the fire brigade. It cuts off oxygen and controls the fire in the critical early minutes, but it is not designed to fully extinguish a battery in deep thermal runaway, no blanket is. A lithium-ion battery can stay hot and reignite, so keep everyone clear and let the professionals handle it.
Does it expire, and how do I store it?
The blanket has no fixed expiry date, but you should inspect it regularly for damage and keep it in its storage bag. Store it somewhere easy to reach near your charging or operating area, wall-mounted or in a clearly labelled cabinet. It's designed for workshop and industrial storage and normal temperature variation; avoid prolonged moisture or chemical contact.
Is it reusable?
The blanket is intended as single-use emergency protection. Once it has been used on a fire, replace it. If you're unsure whether it's still fit for use after any incident or damage, don't rely on it, contact us and replace it.
Is it suitable for warehouses, workshops and fleets?
Yes, it's purpose-built for exactly these settings: warehouses and logistics charging bays, workshops, service centres and industrial facilities. Larger sites usually need more than one, positioned near charging or operating areas. For volume orders, see our Business & Bulk page or contact us.
What about shipping and warranty?
The blanket comes with a 12-month warranty. Because of its size and weight (about 16.9kg), shipping is calculated at checkout based on your location, and shipping is free Australia wide on orders over $500.
